Merzig (ots) - On Tuesday afternoon around 15:30 p.m. there was a serious traffic accident in Merzig. At the junction of Lothringer Strasse / Rieffstrasse at the traffic lights on Kaufland, a 75-year-old cyclist from Merzig was hit by the trailer of a turning articulated lorry and rolled over. Despite all the efforts of the rescue workers, the man died of his injuries at the scene of the accident.
A 54-year-old truck driver drove his truck with a trailer across the Hilbringer Bridge into town, was the first vehicle in the right-turn lane at the intersection, and stopped there due to the red light of the traffic light. At this time, the cyclist was on his pedelec on the common pedestrian and cycle path at the intersection immediately to the right of the truck driver's cab, as his traffic light signal was also showing a red light at this time. When after a short time both traffic lights switched to the green light at the same time, the cyclist accelerated immediately to cross Rieffstrasse via the pedestrian and cyclist ford in the direction of the district administration. At the same time, however, the truck driver turned right into Rieffstraße, although he had not noticed the pedelec driver at all. Here, the tractor initially passed the cyclist who stopped again without a collision, but moments later the bike and the driver were caught by the right side of the trailer, torn to the ground and rolled over due to the decreasing turning radius.
The truck driver suffered a shock and had to be taken to a hospital.
An expert was commissioned to clarify the exact cause of the accident.
