The number of children in low-income families who receive child allowance has tripled to just under one million since January.

This emerges from data from the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, reported by the "Rheinische Post" (Wednesday). According to this, 299.168 children had received the benefit in January of the current year, in August there were already 928.285 children.

Family Minister Franziska Giffey (SPD) attributes the drastic increase to the consequences of the corona crisis and reforms in the law. "It is a great success that three times as many families as there were at the beginning of the year now receive the monthly child benefit supplement," said Giffey. Help those who need support because their income is barely enough for the family. “With Corona, the number of families that the child allowance can help has increased again,” said Giffey. “Because there were numerous households that suddenly had significant income losses.” In March, as a result of the pandemic, the federal government created the “emergency child allowance” with fewer proof requirements. The number of beneficiary children jumped from 376.109 in March to 488.081 in April. The federal government had previously reformed the allowance in two steps in order to reach more children. In June 2019 - before the first reform - the parents of only 253.929 children had made a claim. In addition to child benefit, they receive a child allowance of up to 185 euros per child per month.
