Munich (ots) - Before the first trip after the winter season, the car should also be made fit for spring. The ADAC gives tips on car washing, interior and engine care and tire changes.

- Car wash with pre-wash

In order to remove the winter salt crust from the body, drivers should do a pre-wash before entering the car wash, for example with a steam jet. Stubborn dirt on the car paint softens and prevents dirt particles, sand and stones from acting like sandpaper during the wash and from scratching. In the opinion of the ADAC, simple standard washing programs afterwards are sufficient.

- Clean the windows

The windshield in particular should be carefully cleaned, both inside and out. For a good view, drivers should also check the windshield wiper blades, as they can be worn out. If the rubber is brittle or the blades smear, the wipers should be replaced. The side windows are moved down a little before the interior is cleaned in order to get to the top areas that are otherwise hidden under the seals.

Tip: If you clean the panes vertically on the inside and horizontally on the outside, you can recognize streaks more easily and rework them more precisely.

- Maintain plastic strips and door rubbers

The cleaning of faded plastic trim works well with a plastic cleaner, then it is colored darker with a deep care product. The cleaned rubber seals on the door should be treated with a care product from a specialist car dealer.

- Clean the interior

If necessary, rubber floor mats can be exchanged for summer mats. The footwell should also be thoroughly dried and cleaned, and the seats and floor vacuumed. Gaps can be reached with a narrow vacuum cleaner nozzle. Be careful with softer plastics: the hard nozzle can cause scratches. With a car interior cleaner and a microfiber cloth, fittings, seat cushions and fabric linings are removed from dirt. If this is lower, a wet vacuum cleaner is used after the relevant areas have been sprayed with cleaner. Cockpit spray is suitable for cleaning, preparing and maintaining plastic and smooth leather surfaces.

- Discard ballast

After the end of the ski season, roof boxes and ski racks should be removed because they increase consumption: on the motorway, a roof box burdens the wallet with up to 20 percent additional consumption. The basic carrier alone can increase consumption by around 5 percent. As a rule of thumb: per 100 kilograms there is up to 0,3 liters more fuel per 100 kilometers. Additional loads such as snow chains, litter, ice scrapers and brooms now also have a summer break.

- Check all fluids and lighting

Drivers should also take a look under the bonnet and check the oil, cooling water and the windscreen washer system or, if necessary, add liquid. A window cleaner additive is sufficient in the frost-free period. But be careful: Sometimes this cannot be mixed with the antifreeze that is still in the car wash. The ADAC also recommends checking the lighting.

- tire change

Following the rule of thumb from October to October, the tire change to summer tires is now due. The club advises measuring the tread depth before installation: new tires should be fitted if they are less than three millimeters. After changing the tire, the wheel bolts must be retightened after about 100 to 200 kilometers.
