On Wednesday evening our Elv suffered a bitter defeat in Stuttgart. Due to a late goal one minute before the end of regular time, our team lost 1: 2 (0: 1) at VfB Stuttgart II - although the team's performance was both running and playful.
Compared to the previous game in the DFB-Pokal and the previous games in the league, coach Horst Steffen changed something on the pitch. For the red-banned Sinan Tekerci, Maurice Neubauer ran more offensively on the left, while Fabian Baumgärtel moved back into the defensive chain. Luca Dürholtz also played for Eros Dacaj in Stuttgart from the start.
In the Robert-Schlienz-Stadion right next to the Mercedes-Benz-Arena, a very competitive and running-intensive game developed right from the start, in which both teams gave full throttle. Overall, our Elv was the dominating team, had more of the game and let the ball run nicely. Our team's attacking game looked very good up to the opposing 16s, only the last ball and final pass found no taker in front of the opposing goal. Accordingly, in the first half, our Elv's mandatory goal shots were rather rare, despite an otherwise good performance. Unfortunately, a large series of corners did not lead to success, Manuel Feil had the best chance from the game on the part of our team, but his conclusion after a nice solo in the opposing penalty area was saved by VfB keeper Florian Schock. On the other hand, our team's defensive work in the first half was also good. Nevertheless, Stuttgart came up with two counterattacks, the first one our goalkeeper Frank Lehmann was able to parry strongly (9th), but the second then led to VfB taking the lead, which Joel Richter scored in the 38th minute.
After the break, our Elv pressed even more on the first own goal and thus on the equalizer. With a lot of power in the duels and a tireless running performance, the SVE continued to look for the way forward - and thus also came to success! In the 52nd minute, Luca Dürholtz kept an overview of the crowd in the VfB penalty area and was able to put the ball into the opponent's goal from a distance with a lot of feeling to the deserved 1: 1 equalization. The goal was also the start of a wild second half. The referee only awarded the Stuttgarters a hand penalty for a few minutes, but Domenico Alberico set it to the left of the goal (55th). After that, the game turned into an open exchange of blows, in which both teams had real big chances.
For our Elv Schnellbacher (58th), Suero and Neubauer (61st), Dragon (70th / 81st) and the substitute Gösweiner (82nd / 85th) had some really good chances on the decisive goal. Conversely, Zografakis (65th) and Sökler (65th / 85th), Stein (76th) and Kober (82nd) caused a sensation for Stuttgart, but all failed because of the strongly reacting Lehmann in the SVE goal. Nevertheless: The goal was in the air - and it was about to fall. Very unfortunate, however. One minute before the end of regular time there was another penalty kick for VfB, this time Marc Stein converted the foul penalty to the 2-1 final score and thus to the home win of the Stuttgart. A very bitter finish for our Elv, who deserved at least one point here.
Now it is time to process and analyze. In just a few days, the next difficult task will start. On Saturday, September 19, our Elv welcomes TSV Schott Mainz in the URSAPHARM-Arena at 14.00 p.m. - a motivated climber who has already caused a sensation during the week with a 3-0 win against FC Homburg.
