According to researchers, people who have decided to retrain and switch to the care industry in adulthood often find it difficult to get started. Because, unlike the young nursing students, they seem life-experienced and responsible to colleagues, they are often assigned tasks for which they have not yet been trained. "It is assumed that they can handle difficult tasks on their own," says a study by the union-related Hans Böckler Foundation, about which the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" reports in its Tuesday edition.
At the same time, career changers have "relatively concrete ideas about how this profession should be implemented," said study author Christa Larsen from the Frankfurt Institute for Economics, Labor and Culture. In practice, however, they could not implement them under time pressure, and that causes frustration. According to Larsen, the entry of foreign nurses into the German labor market is different, but similarly problematic: they are rather underwhelmed. Outside Germany, nurses are mostly academically educated, their training and everyday work are more like those of German doctors. Pure care activities such as washing or eating are rarely part of your duties abroad - this is done by assistants or family members. But although the immigrants are highly qualified, in Germany they are initially only used for the simplest of tasks - because their German language skills are not good enough or because they have to wait for their professional qualifications to be recognized, which can take up to 18 months. Although the workforce in nursing facilities became increasingly mixed and needed support because of their different previous experience, little was done in the homes and clinics to integrate new arrivals, the researcher said. Larsen criticizes the fact that the integration and incorporation of new staff are not financed by the health insurance companies. "The legislator is doing a lot for the recruitment of nurses." She demands: "At least when it comes to financing their integration into the company, he should also get involved". ()
