Saarland's industrial companies cannot escape the economic downturn. The weakness in demand that has persisted for months is having an increasing impact on the manufacturing sector. According to the Saarland Statistical Office, orders received from January to August 2019 were 8,5 percent below the comparable previous year's figure. In the same period, sales decreased by 3,4 percent to EUR 17,8 billion.
The lull has now reached almost all industries. The metal production and metalworking companies reported a significant drop in orders of 16,0 percent. Sales there decreased by 2,1 percent to EUR 3,0 billion. Orders from the manufacturers of metal products were still at the previous year's level, but revenues fell by 6,6 percent to EUR 1,2 billion.
The mechanical engineering companies lost 7,8 percent in order intake, their sales remained at 3,6 billion euros, 4,1 percent below the previous year's value. The 9,2 percent increase in domestic orders among manufacturers of motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts was unable to compensate for the drop in demand from abroad. Overall, the losses were 8,1 percent. Accordingly, sales in the auto industry fell by 5,2 percent to EUR 5,9 billion.
In the food and feed industry, sales of EUR 880 million were 0,4 percent above the comparable values. The rubber and plastic goods industry generated sales of EUR 692 million. This is 2,2 percent less than in the same period last year. Sales of “Manufacturers of glass, ceramics and stone processing” improved by 4,2 percent to EUR 204 million.
