The Saarland Prime Minister Tobias Hans (CDU) sees the Greens as the “main challenger” of his party in next year's federal election.

"The Greens are very strong, as was shown by the election in North Rhine-Westphalia," Hans told the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung". As a party, the CDU must rally behind a candidate for chancellor as soon as possible and support him with all its might.

He thinks the current good poll numbers for the Union are only a snapshot. "We cannot assume that it is a law of nature that we will appoint the Chancellor again after the next federal election," said Hans. He warned his party against a new camp formation in the course of the chairman election at the party conference in December. “If we are now too controversial about a new chairman, this situation could get worse. That would not be good shortly before the federal election, ”said Hans of the NOZ. “That is why many members of our party want the candidates to assure themselves that there will be a team solution at least after the election,” added the head of government.
