Saarbrücken (ots) - On early Wednesday morning (03.06.2020,) there was a basement fire in an apartment building in Ottstraße in Saarbrücken at around 02:30 a.m., in which only happy circumstances did not injure anyone. A 37 year old man from Hof (Bavaria) was arrested at the scene. He is under urgent suspicion of having set the fire and is now in custody for attempted murder and serious arson.
According to initial investigations, the 37-year-old and his former partner, who lived in the property, had a verbal argument shortly before the fire broke out. According to the current findings of the fire investigation department, the suspect set objects in the basement of the house on fire. Only through a water pipe that was accidentally damaged by the fire could the fire in the building not spread, so that all twelve people of the house remained unharmed. However, some of them had to be rescued from the three-story house by the fire department.
The man was still found at the scene of the operation by a bleeding wound on his arm, which he apparently contracted when he smashed the glass in the front door. Testimony confirmed the suspicion of the man.
Due to the fire at night, the public prosecutor in Saarbrücken, in addition to the serious arson, suggested an arrest warrant for attempted murder at the competent district court in Saarbrücken. After the suspect had been presented and the arrest warrant had been issued, he was taken to the Saarbrücken correctional facility.
The investigation continues.
