The city of St. Ingbert mourns the loss of Reinhold WIrtz. An obituary.

His life was shaped by his political work. The convinced social democrat accompanied numerous offices with great commitment and passion. He worked full-time for IG Metall Völklingen as a trade unionist for 33 years, until 2004 as the first authorized representative.

Reinhold Wirtz had been a member of the SPD since 1961, from 1966 to 1989 as chairman of the SPD Oberwürzbach. From 1979 to 2003 he was also chairman of the SPD city association.

He was also a member of the Oberwürzbach local council. From 1979 to 2004 he left special traces as the SPD parliamentary group leader in the city council of St. Ingbert. As a social democrat, he also worked in the Saarland Landtag for ten years.

For his years of political activity, Reinhold Wirtz was awarded the Saarland Order of Merit, the highest Saarland official award, by the state government in May 2009.

“Reinhold Wirtz has always been a credible representative of the employees' interests, who has worked tirelessly for improvements in working conditions and social justice. In addition, for many years as a committed SPD politician, he helped shape the image of his hometown Oberwürzbach and the city of St. Ingbert. The joint dialogue, also across party lines, was important to him, ”said Mayor Dr. Ulli Meyer the political work of the deserved social democrat.

Reinhold Wirtz died after a serious illness on June 22, 2020 at the age of 77.
