The farms came to a total of 117.600 tons of asparagus, announced the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Wednesday. Lower Saxony had the largest share nationwide with 26.600 tons and 23 percent.
This was followed by Bavaria with 18 percent (21.200 tons) and Brandenburg with 17 percent (19.900 tons). In total, asparagus was grown on an area of 25.900 hectares - that corresponds to 21 percent of the nationwide cultivation area for vegetables. One of the reasons for the lower asparagus harvest is that harvest workers were temporarily unable to enter the country at the end of March 2020 due to closed borders. Most of the asparagus is harvested by seasonal workers. Before the outbreak of the corona pandemic, around 937.000 of the 272.000 workers in agriculture were seasonal. Their share was 29 percent.
