After the corona pandemic was successfully contained, the Knappschaftsklinikum Saar moves towards normal operations.

In order to continue to prevent corona infections, the strict hygiene measures are maintained. "These have proven themselves in the crisis"Says managing director Andrea Massone. "The emergency operation was never restricted for us anyway. We were and are there for the citizens of the region around the clock."

Fear of infection in the clinic is unfounded

While it was still uncertain in March whether the population's wave of infections could be contained in time, doctors are now worrying about a completely different phenomenon: many people with acute complaints do not dare to call the doctor or emergency doctor - for fear of one Corona infection in the hospital.

However, this is completely unfounded, assures Dr. Eva Anyiloibi, specialist medical director of the emergency department in Püttlingen. "Patients do not have to do without medical help for fear of infection."

At the Knappschaftsklinikum Saar, patients with suspected corona would be strictly isolated from the outset and completely separated from the rest in separate wards. That applies equally to Püttlingen and Sulzbach.

Strict hygiene measures

Overall, strict hygiene measures ensure the best possible protection against infection. Doctors and nurses have been wearing protective masks since March to protect patients from infection. "Our hygiene measures workAndrea Massone assures.

Visitors are still not allowed.

At the entrances, all incoming patients are checked for fever and other risk factors. Minimum distance, mask requirement and permanent hand hygiene apply in all departments.

But apart from the stricter protective measures, normality is now returning.

From the thyroid specialists in Sulzbach to the breast center in Püttlingen to cross-site care with artificial hip joints, the various departments at KKSaar are now ramping up their treatments again.

In the Sulzbach Eye Clinic, all office hours are back in operation. Just with very strict hygiene rules so that nobody has to be afraid of the corona virus.

Positive assessment of crisis management: no patient had to do without urgent treatment

In the state government's pandemic plan, the Saar Knappschaftsklinikum was never intended as a corona center, but rather for the general care of acute patients, both in Sulzbach and in Püttlingen.

"All the important treatments went on with us during the entire time“Says Massone. "This applies in particular to our centers, from the vascular center to the thyroid and continence to the breast cancer and intestine center. Thanks to our early preparation for the crisis, the clinic ran smoothly and no patient had to do without urgent treatment."

Only non-urgent surgeries were postponed to keep extra beds free. These OPs are now being made up.

If the number of Covid19 patients should rise again in the future, the additional capacities in the KKSaar could be quickly reactivated, said the managing director.
