As part of a ceremony in the State Chancellery, Prime Minister Tobias Hans presented Ewald Groß from Neunkirchen with the Federal Cross of Merit on Friday (June 22.6.18, XNUMX).

The laureate was awarded the Federal Order of Merit by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on the proposal of Prime Minister Tobias Hans.

In his speech, the head of the Saarland paid tribute to the special services and dedication of the award-winner for the common good. According to him, the award was an expression of thanks and appreciation for the high degree of unselfish commitment by Ewald Groß to the community. Tobias Hans:

“Ewald Groß has truly earned this outstanding award for his good work for the benefit of society. His hometown Neunkirchen in particular benefited from his energy and his volunteer work. For many years, Ewald Groß has been particularly involved in the cultural and historical area of his hometown and has had a significant impact on local politics in Neunkirchen. ”

Ewald Groß has been committed to his hometown Neunkirchen for many years. From 1974 to 1988 he was mayor there and played a major role in the structural change in Neunkirchen. As an engineer and long-time member of the parish council of Wellesweiler, he also supported the construction of the Catholic church and the new parish center.

In addition to numerous club activities, he has a particular love of cultural funding. He actively promotes the Neunkircher Stadtkapelle and, as a passionate organ player, is committed to the early musical education of young people. In addition, Ewald Groß made great contributions to the renowned Saarland artist Walter Bernstein (1901 - 1981), who artistically documented the Saarland mining and mining history in his works. Ewald Groß recognized Walter Bernstein's artistic potential early on. He organized numerous exhibitions that made the Saarland artist's work public. With this he achieved that Bernstein's artistic legacy was not forgotten.

Ten years ago, Ewald Groß also initiated the foundation of the Städtische Galerie / Museum Neunkirchen eV support association. The association wants to make the Städtische Galerie more attractive and aims to build a new museum for socio-economic history. With the reopening of the former community center in Neunkirchen in 2015, with the active support of Ewald Groß, we have come a lot closer to this goal. Also worth mentioning is his commitment to numerous book projects that deal with the history and tradition of the region.

Prime Minister Tobias Hans concludes:

“Ewald Groß is a role model for voluntary and social engagement. For his voluntary work as a cultural sponsor of the city of Neunkirchen, which he has been doing for decades, he has rendered special services which fully justify an award in the proposed form. ”
