A major fire broke out yesterday in Europa-Park in Rust. At times, more than 500 forces fought the flames while the entire park was evacuated. Visitors were apparently not injured. Three firefighters are said to have been slightly injured during the operation.
Terrifying pictures from Rust
The pictures that came to us from Rust were terrifying: Flames burst out of the warehouse, where the fire probably originated.
Black plumes of smoke lay over the park and the flames quickly spread to rides in the "Dutch Quarter" bordering the "Scandinavian Quarter".
While at first only the area around the source of the fire was evacuated, this evacuation area was later extended to the entire park - around 25.000 people are said to have been evacuated.
The reason for the fire is unknown. Investigators start their work today. This could take some time, because embers' nests are still being cleared.
According to the police headquarters in Offenburg, there were three slightly injured firefighters, among them they were said to have suffered smoke gas poisoning.
Around 500 emergency services on site
As the police headquarters in Offenburg continues to report, there were around 500 emergency services on site, including around 250 firefighters, 150 emergency services, 50 from the THW and around 50 from the police.
Park opens again today
According to the park operators, the park has reopened at 09:00 am this morning. The "Dutch and Scandinavian quarters" affected by the fire will of course remain closed. The events, such as "Always on Sundays" also take place as planned.
