Munich (ots) - Where did the summer trip go? As in previous years, the ADAC evaluated route requests from its members and compared them with previous years. Due to the Corona restrictions, the travel period between May and September 2020 was particularly considered this year. The restrictions during this period had a noticeable impact on travel behavior. With 345.547 route requests, significantly fewer requests were registered than in previous years.
Many travelers have chosen to vacation in their own country. As in previous years, Germany was in first place among the most popular holiday destinations, but increased by 33,3 percent compared to the previous year (29,9 percent). It is followed by Italy with 14,9 percent, albeit with large losses. Croatia recorded the greatest increases and came in third with 14,3 percent. Spain no longer makes it into the top 10. Last year it was still in seventh place.
In the Covid 19 year, two Croatian regions, Istria and the Dalmatian coast, landed in the first two places among the most popular holiday regions. The Lake Garda region has crashed. Last year it was in third place, now it is still in eighth place. In return, three German regions climbed up: southern Upper Bavaria / Allgäu (3rd place), Schleswig-Holstein (6th place) and the Baltic Sea / Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (7th place). This shows once again how popular holidays in their own country are this year.
Camping holidays were booming this summer. For campers, Germany also ranks first with 35,1 percent and is also recording significant growth here. Croatia (15,4 percent) overtook Italy (14,9 percent) compared to the previous year. For the first time, Switzerland also achieved a top 10 place here.
