Corona crisis continues to slow down domestic tourism

The effects of the corona crisis on domestic tourism in Germany also made themselves felt in July 2020.

With 45,4 million overnight stays by domestic and foreign guests in German accommodation providers, there was a decrease of 22,8 percent compared to the same month last year, announced the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) according to preliminary results on Thursday. In the meantime, the domestic accommodation providers registered 4,8 million overnight stays among guests from abroad.

This corresponds to a decrease of 56,7 percent compared to the same month last year. According to statisticians, the development of domestic guests is better with 40,6 million overnight stays. Here, too, the numbers are 14,9 percent lower than in the same month last year. From January to July 2020, the accommodation establishments recorded a total of 162,5 million overnight stays. That is 42,2 percent less than in the same period last year. Only 142,1 million overnight stays by domestic guests were recorded during this period (-38,3 percent). The drop in the group of foreign guests is even more pronounced: 20,4 million overnight stays meant a decrease of 59,9 percent.
