Schalke 04 is the first Bundesliga soccer club to officially introduce a salary cap for the professional department.

As reported by the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” (Monday edition), there should be no new contract from now on in which a mark of around 2,5 million euros annual salary is exceeded. Players who asked for more money would no longer be hired, the club managers have agreed to this.

With the self-limitation, Schalke primarily responds to the tense economic situation. For this reason, emergency sales are not a taboo subject for those responsible. According to the SZ, the sale of one of the players with a high market value is considered to secure the budget and generate money for reinforcements. Head coach David Wagner should remain in office without a win despite the historically unique series of 16 point games.
