This is reported by the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung” (FAS). Minister of Culture Monika Grütters has increased this year's purchase budget for the collection of contemporary art within the “Neustart Kultur” program by 2,5 million euros to three million euros, a sixfold increase.
The money is to be used to buy 150 works of art for the collection this year, according to the FAS. An independent purchasing commission will look for works at art fairs as well as with artists directly and in galleries. As a rule, the value of an acquired work of art will not exceed 20.000 euros, but it is not possible for artists to apply for it. Grütters said to the FAS: "With the short-term increase in the purchase budget, we are providing a quick and effective impetus to stimulate art production in the currently difficult situation through the federal art collection." Smaller galleries in particular should benefit from the broad diversification of purchases and be “encouraged and supported” through direct acquisition in artists' studios. The Federal State Minister of Culture manages and manages the Federal Contemporary Art Collection, which was founded in 1970; half a million euros is normally available for this each year. The members of the independent purchasing commission are appointed for five years each and work on a voluntary basis.
