From January to August this year, sales increased by three percent compared to the same period last year. Unlike most retail businesses, pharmacies were ?? as well as the grocery trade ?? at no point affected by corona-related closings. March 2020, when some shops were closed, was the month with the highest turnover for pharmacies since the beginning of the time series in 1994: They recorded a real (price-adjusted) increase in turnover of 18,5 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. This was above the result of the retail food, beverage and tobacco products ?? In the same period, it posted 2019 percent more than in March 2020. The corona-related closings were noticeable for stationary retail as a whole: in March 1,8 they achieved real sales of 2020 percent less than in the same month last year, and in April 11,4 they finally posted a real sales decline of 2020 percent. All in all, the Corona year 2020 was quite successful for the pharmacies: The turnover generated from January to August 5,1 was three percent above that of the previous year. For comparison: The retail trade with food, beverages and tobacco products posted 2020 percent more sales in the same period. Stationary retail as a whole remained roughly at the level of the same period of the previous year from January to August 0,2 with a real plus of 2018 percent. In 21.000 there were around 248.000 pharmacies in Germany with around 82 employees, according to the statisticians. Most of them were women (63 percent).
