Airbag jackets for motorcyclists in the ADAC test / All models convince with protection potential - differences in handling

Munich (ots) - Accidents often have a greater impact on motorcyclists than on motorists. In the event of an impact, the latter are protected not only by the body, but also by airbags. In the meantime, motorcyclists can also benefit from an airbag in the form of a vest or jacket in the event of an accident. The ADAC tested what the latest generation of airbag clothing systems can do in a crash test. The result: all jackets tested are rated “good” and offer additional protection in the chest and back area in the event of an accident at speeds of up to 50 km / h.

A total of three airbag jackets were examined: the Tech-Air Street-e system from Alpinestars, the D-Air Street Smart JKT from Dainese and the eVest from HELD / In & Motion. All three jackets have an intervention time (from the first push to the full inflation of the airbag) of around 80 milliseconds. Airbag protection is already available on all products before the motorcycle rider hits the car. There are small differences in handling. In the case of an accident, for example, the Dainese and Alpinestars models are repaired by the dealer or manufacturer. The user can repair the Held / In & Motion vest once it has been released. The vest by Dainese is the only one that can also be combined with any suitable protective clothing, for example the existing leather suit. The other vests require their own compatible jackets.

The ADAC tested the first electronic airbag jacket from Dainese back in 2013. At that time, the sensors were still installed on the vehicle. Additional components had to be attached to the machine, which meant that the jacket only worked in conjunction with the appropriately equipped motorcycle. The jackets now tested all have their own sensors and can be used autonomously.

The ADAC recommends that consumers take a detailed look at the product and its own specific use. The operating instructions must be followed because the correct setting and maintenance of the protective vests is important so that they achieve their full protection potential. In addition, an extensive test drive with the jacket in question is useful to familiarize yourself with the comfort and weight before buying.
