A civil protection exercise is held in the district of Neunkirchen every five years. This year Saarstahl Neunkirchen made parts of the site available. Around 150 emergency services from the fire brigade, THW, DRK, Saarstahl plant fire brigade and the German lifesaving company trained the emergency.
The challenging scenario
Such an assignment is about coordinating the interaction between all the trades involved and thus preparing for an - hopefully never occurring - emergency. In the fictional but challenging scenario, a multi-faceted danger situation awaited the units:
As a result of a forklift colliding with a gas pipe, natural gas escapes in a loading hall and several fires break out. Parts of the roof collapse, a freight train that is just entering loses its load due to emergency braking, and a passing car collides with the train. Engine drivers and car drivers are injured as well as some employees who are in the hall and who are blocked by fire and smoke. And as if that weren't enough, containers with hazardous substances (cleaning agents) are damaged by flying debris and the chemicals in them leak out.
In addition to fighting fires and rescuing people, technical assistance, water supply and support also had to contain the escaping hazardous substances.
Highest demands - only prepared by regular training
In order to successfully survive such a major loss situation, regular training is required. It is all the better to know that the current exercise has shown that everyone involved is prepared for dangerous situations like this.
